Session 12:
NEW ENERGY VEHICLES
Governments and agencies around the world have in recent years sought to support the deployment of alternatives to the traditional internal combustion engine in cars, trucks, buses and other vehicles in pursuit of multiple benefits including carbon emission reductions, improved urban air quality, energy security and the economic rewards of participation in a nascent industrial sector. China, with the New Energy Vehicle programme, has been at the forefront of these initiatives.
Inevitably, the search for alternative fuels and power systems for vehicles raises enormous challenges for all participants. Innovations in the technical sphere have to be paralleled by innovations in policy, legal frameworks, business models, consumer behaviours and many other dimensions. Moreover, the orchestration of all of these innovations into a coherent development programme, while simultaneously protecting the established industry from a destabilising transition, requires both vision and subtlety. New energy vehicles are thus part of a wider revolution in urbanism and mobility in which a new 'ecosystem' of clean technologies is being embedded in a smart ecosystem of support services.
This session will therefore explore some of the innovation challenges facing the introduction of New Energy Vehicles, from the technological to the socio-political. In finding technology solutions to the energy challenges for vehicles of the future, we must also find social solutions.
